Journey with Johny :: Memory

Memory

Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.

Oscar Wilde

This is Sam. Sam is an elephant.
He has a good memory.
And he gonna tell us about it.

Long Term memory is similar to a big warehouse. It contains all our long-time experience that makes us unique.

Working memory like a small part of a sandy beach near the ocean. New waves are washing off everything you wrote.

To remember something better you need to repeat it from time to time.

Software like Anki implements special algorithms that make repetition efficient.

When you need to remember some idea or concept - try to visualize it or imagine that YOU are this concept.

Funny or unusual images stuck in memory better.

Use mnemonics to memorize a list of linked ideas. We all remember that Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain. Right?

You can memorize any list of things with powerful technic called Memory Palace.

To use it just imagine a place you know very well. Like your own house or center of your city.

Choose any location and then place items you want to remember inside.

For example we'll memorize next todo list:

  • Prepare a presentation about Egyptian pyramids.
  • Watch Discovery documentary about bats.
  • Buy food for your fishes, toy bricks as a present for nephew and some cherries for a wife.

Well, let's do it.

This flat is cute. But something strange is going on there.
A small bat is eating a huge cherry, two fishes are swimming in the window, few toy bricks are laying on the bed and the pyramid that's going to fall from the sofa.

See? That's really easy.
Practice it a little and never forget things you want to remember.

And last, but not least. Remember that good sleep is very important for the memory!

Say bye to Sam and continue our journey
